A temporary organ that develops in the uterus during pregnancy and connects the mother to the fetus via the umbilical cord. The placenta delivers oxygen and nutrients to the fetus and removes waste products. It also produces hormones that support the pregnancy. Delivered after the baby (as the "afterbirth").
