A flexible, rope-like cord containing two arteries and one vein, enclosed in a gelatinous substance (Wharton's jelly). It connects the baby's abdomen (navel) to the placenta and serves as the lifeline for oxygen and nutrient delivery and waste removal. The cord is cut after birth and the stump typically falls off within 1โ€“3 weeks.
