The brand name for synthetic oxytocin, the most commonly used drug to induce or augment labor. Administered intravenously in a controlled, gradually increasing dose, Pitocin stimulates uterine contractions. It is also given after delivery to help the uterus contract and reduce postpartum bleeding.
