๐ Definition
The release of a mature egg (oocyte) from the dominant ovarian follicle, triggered by a surge in luteinizing hormone (LH). Ovulation occurs once per cycle, approximately 14 days before the next expected period (regardless of cycle length). The egg survives 12โ24 hours after release. Sperm can survive up to 5 days, creating a fertile window of approximately 6 days.
