Ovulation

The release of a mature egg from the ovary โ€” once per cycle

๐Ÿ“– Definition

The release of a mature egg (oocyte) from the dominant ovarian follicle, triggered by a surge in luteinizing hormone (LH). Ovulation occurs once per cycle, approximately 14 days before the next expected period (regardless of cycle length). The egg survives 12โ€“24 hours after release. Sperm can survive up to 5 days, creating a fertile window of approximately 6 days.
