A small, fluid-filled sac in the ovary that houses a developing egg (oocyte). Each month, several follicles begin to develop but typically only one becomes dominant and releases its egg at ovulation. The size and number of follicles are monitored during IVF cycles to assess response to stimulation. After releasing its egg, the follicle becomes the corpus luteum.
