A rapid, large increase in luteinizing hormone (LH) from the pituitary gland that triggers the release of the dominant egg from the ovary (ovulation) approximately 24–48 hours later. LH surge detection is the basis of ovulation predictor kit (OPK) tests. Testing twice daily (morning and afternoon) captures the surge most reliably.
