๐ Definition
A condition in which the volume of amniotic fluid surrounding the baby is lower than normal. It is diagnosed via ultrasound using the amniotic fluid index (AFI) or single deepest pocket measurement. Causes include fetal kidney problems, post-term pregnancy, placental insufficiency, and premature rupture of membranes. Severe oligohydramnios can compress the umbilical cord and restrict fetal movement and lung development.
