The second phase of the menstrual cycle, lasting from ovulation until the start of the next menstrual period. During this phase, the corpus luteum produces progesterone to maintain the uterine lining for potential implantation. The luteal phase is typically 12–16 days. A short luteal phase (under 10 days) may impair implantation and is sometimes called luteal phase defect.
