Lanugo

Fine, downy hair that covers the fetus and may still be present at birth

๐Ÿ“– Definition

The fine, soft, unpigmented hair that covers much of the fetal body beginning around 16โ€“20 weeks. Lanugo helps regulate temperature and holds vernix caseosa (the waxy coating) against the skin. Most lanugo is shed before birth and replaced by vellus hair, but premature babies may be born with noticeable lanugo that sheds within the first few weeks.
