A hormone produced by the cells that form the placenta after a fertilized egg implants in the uterus. hCG levels rise rapidly in early pregnancy, doubling every 48–72 hours, and are what home and blood pregnancy tests detect. Levels peak around 10–12 weeks then gradually decline.
