๐Ÿ“– Overview

Motor development follows a head-to-toe, centre-to-outside pattern. Babies gain control of their head and neck first, then trunk, then legs. Fine motor skills (grasping, pinching) develop alongside as the nervous system matures. The WHO Multicentre Growth Reference Study (2006) established that healthy children from Ghana, India, Norway, Oman, the USA and Brazil reach major motor milestones within a wide normal range.

๐Ÿ“ˆ Developmental Progression

0โ€“3 months
  • Turns head side to side
  • Holds head up 45ยฐ on tummy
  • Hands mostly closed
  • Kicks legs alternately
3โ€“6 months
  • Holds head steady
  • Rolls tummy to back
  • Reaches and bats at objects
  • Passes objects hand to hand
6โ€“9 months
  • Sits without support (~6โ€“7 months)
  • Pincer grasp emerging
  • Bangs objects together
  • Pulls to stand (some babies)
9โ€“12 months
  • Pulls to stand
  • Cruises along furniture
  • Pincer grasp refined
  • First independent steps (9โ€“12 months)
12โ€“18 months
  • Walks steadily
  • Runs (stiffly)
  • Scribbles with crayon
  • Stacks 2โ€“4 blocks
18โ€“24 months
  • Runs more smoothly
  • Kicks ball
  • Climbs stairs with help
  • Turns book pages one at a time

๐ŸŽฎ Activities to Support Motor Skills

  • Daily tummy time from day one โ€” builds neck, shoulder, and core strength
  • Finger foods from 6+ months โ€” fine motor practice with real purpose
  • Stacking cups and blocks โ€” bilateral coordination
  • Pushing a toy cart or trolley โ€” prepares for independent walking
  • Ball rolling back and forth โ€” reaching, tracking, and core stability
  • Water play โ€” pouring and scooping develops hand-eye coordination

โš ๏ธ Talk to Your Paediatrician Ifโ€ฆ

  • Head flopping at 4 months (head control not established)
  • Not sitting independently by 9 months
  • Not pulling to stand by 12 months
  • Fisting (hand always clenched) past 3โ€“4 months
  • Not walking by 18 months
  • Strong preference for one hand before 18 months (may signal weakness on the other side)
