๐๏ธ Motor Skills
Gross motor (large muscle movement) and fine motor (precision hand skills) development from birth to 2 years.

๐ Overview
Motor development follows a head-to-toe, centre-to-outside pattern. Babies gain control of their head and neck first, then trunk, then legs. Fine motor skills (grasping, pinching) develop alongside as the nervous system matures. The WHO Multicentre Growth Reference Study (2006) established that healthy children from Ghana, India, Norway, Oman, the USA and Brazil reach major motor milestones within a wide normal range.

๐ฎ Activities to Support Motor Skills
- Daily tummy time from day one โ builds neck, shoulder, and core strength
- Finger foods from 6+ months โ fine motor practice with real purpose
- Stacking cups and blocks โ bilateral coordination
- Pushing a toy cart or trolley โ prepares for independent walking
- Ball rolling back and forth โ reaching, tracking, and core stability
- Water play โ pouring and scooping develops hand-eye coordination
โ ๏ธ Talk to Your Paediatrician Ifโฆ
- Head flopping at 4 months (head control not established)
- Not sitting independently by 9 months
- Not pulling to stand by 12 months
- Fisting (hand always clenched) past 3โ4 months
- Not walking by 18 months
- Strong preference for one hand before 18 months (may signal weakness on the other side)
