๐Ÿ“– Overview

Language development has two streams: receptive (understanding language) and expressive (producing it). Babies understand far more than they can say โ€” an 8-month-old may understand 10โ€“20 words but say zero. The AAP notes that bilingual children may reach word count milestones slightly later than monolinguals but are not developmentally behind. Quality of interactions โ€” not quantity of words passively heard โ€” drives early language. The 'language gap' research (Hart & Risley) shows 30 million words of meaningful parent-child conversation by age 3 predicts later academic success.

๐ŸŽฎ Activities to Support Communication & Language

  • Parentese (slow, high-pitched, exaggerated speech) โ€” proven to accelerate language learning
  • Read aloud daily from birth โ€” label pictures, pause, let baby 'answer'
  • Serve-and-return conversations โ€” respond to every babble as if it's a word
  • Narrate your actions ('I'm pouring the milk into the cup')
  • Limit screen time under 18 months (AAP) โ€” passive TV doesn't build language
  • Expand on what baby says: 'More?' โ†’ 'You want more banana?'
