Perineum

The area of tissue between the vagina and anus that may stretch or tear during birth

Pronunciation: /pehr-ih-NEE-um/

๐Ÿ“– Definition

The area of skin and muscle between the vaginal opening and the anus. During vaginal delivery, the perineum must stretch to allow the baby's head to pass through, and may tear (perineal laceration) or be surgically cut (episiotomy). Perineal massage in late pregnancy may help reduce tearing.
