A type of miscarriage in which the embryo or fetus stops developing and dies but is not immediately expelled, and the mother may have no symptoms. Also called a silent or incomplete miscarriage. Often discovered at a routine ultrasound when no heartbeat is detected or growth has stopped. Management options include expectant (waiting for natural passage), medical (misoprostol), or surgical (D&C).
