A mineral required for the production of hemoglobin (the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen). Iron requirements increase substantially during pregnancy to support expanded blood volume and fetal and placental needs. Iron-deficiency anemia is the most common nutritional deficiency in pregnancy. Recommended daily intake is 27 mg for pregnant women. Found in red meat, poultry, fish, beans, lentils, and fortified cereals.
