A type of diabetes that develops during pregnancy in women who did not previously have diabetes. It occurs when the body cannot produce enough insulin to meet the increased needs of pregnancy, causing blood sugar levels to rise. It is typically diagnosed between 24–28 weeks via a glucose challenge test and usually resolves after delivery.
