Car Seat Laws in Texas
Texas fines can reach $10,000 if a child is injured while unrestrained.
Rear-Facing
Until age 2 or RF seat limit (recommended)
Texas law requires a child safety seat for children under 8 who are under 4'9"
Forward-Facing
After RF stage until FF seat limit
Harnessed seat required
Booster Seat
Until age 8 AND 4'9" tall
Must meet BOTH conditions to transition out of a booster
Seat Belt Only
Age 8+ AND 4'9" tall; all occupants required
Seat belt must fit properly across chest and hips — not across the neck
Fine for Violations
Up to $250 per violation; up to $10,000 if child is injured
⚠️ Law vs. AAP Recommendations
State law sets the legal minimum. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends keeping children rear-facing as long as possible within the seat's weight and height limits — often beyond the legal minimum age. Always follow the seat manufacturer's guidelines and AAP recommendations for maximum safety.
