Car Seat Laws in Alabama
Alabama law requires children under 6 to ride in the back seat whenever possible.

AAP recommends staying rear-facing as long as the seat allows
Forward-Facing
Ages 1–5 or until FF weight limit
Must use a harness until child outgrows the forward-facing seat
Booster Seat
Ages 5–7 or until 4'9" tall
High-back or backless booster with vehicle seat belt
Seat Belt Only
Age 8+ or 4'9" tall; seat belt must fit properly
Seat belt must fit properly across chest and hips — not across the neck

⚠️ Law vs. AAP Recommendations
State law sets the legal minimum. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends keeping children rear-facing as long as possible within the seat's weight and height limits — often beyond the legal minimum age. Always follow the seat manufacturer's guidelines and AAP recommendations for maximum safety.
