Eating in the First Trimester

The first trimester can be the hardest time to eat well. Nausea, food aversions, and fatigue make balanced nutrition challenging. The most important thing: eat whatever you can manage, and don't stress about perfection.

When Food Is Hard

Up to 80% of pregnant people experience nausea in the first trimester. Eating for nutrition takes a backseat to eating anything at all. Strategies:

  • Eat small amounts frequently rather than three large meals
  • Keep crackers or dry toast bedside for before you get up
  • Cold foods are often better tolerated than hot (less smell)
  • Ginger (tea, candies, capsules) has good evidence for reducing nausea
  • B6 supplements (10–25 mg three times daily) can reduce nausea — ask your provider
  • Avoid an empty stomach — low blood sugar worsens nausea

The Non-Negotiables in the First Trimester

Even if eating is hard, try to prioritize:

  • Folic acid via prenatal vitamin (most critical nutrient in the first 12 weeks)
  • Protein in any tolerable form
  • Hydration — dehydration worsens nausea
  • Anything with iron if you can tolerate it

The Calorie Picture

You don't need extra calories in the first trimester (the "eating for two" myth). Your caloric needs increase only slightly until the second trimester. Focus on quality, not quantity. The first trimester is about organ formation — what you eat matters, but volume is less critical.
