The colloquial term for rupture of the amniotic membranes, releasing amniotic fluid. It can feel like a gush or a slow trickle of clear fluid. Labor typically begins or is induced within 24 hours of membranes rupturing to reduce infection risk. See also: Rupture of Membranes (SROM/AROM).
