The premature rupture of the amniotic membranes before 37 weeks of pregnancy, before labor has begun. PPROM presents a risk of infection (chorioamnionitis), cord prolapse, and preterm birth. Management depends on gestational age — expectant management with antibiotics and steroids is often used before 34 weeks to allow further fetal maturity; delivery is recommended after 34 weeks.
