When the amniotic sac breaks and fluid is released before or during labor

The rupture of the amniotic sac, releasing amniotic fluid from the vagina. This is popularly known as "water breaking" and can occur spontaneously before or during labor (SROM โ€” spontaneous rupture of membranes) or may be performed artificially by a provider (AROM). Once membranes rupture, labor typically begins within 24 hours.
