📖 Definition
The rupture of the amniotic sac, releasing amniotic fluid from the vagina. This is popularly known as "water breaking" and can occur spontaneously before or during labor (SROM — spontaneous rupture of membranes) or may be performed artificially by a provider (AROM). Once membranes rupture, labor typically begins within 24 hours.
