The final part of the first stage of labor when the cervix dilates from approximately 8 to 10 cm. Transition is typically the most intense and difficult phase, with very strong, frequent contractions (often 2โ€“3 minutes apart, 60โ€“90 seconds long). It is usually the shortest phase, lasting 15 minutes to 1 hour. After transition, the pushing stage begins.
