The final part of the first stage of labor when the cervix dilates from approximately 8 to 10 cm. Transition is typically the most intense and difficult phase, with very strong, frequent contractions (often 2–3 minutes apart, 60–90 seconds long). It is usually the shortest phase, lasting 15 minutes to 1 hour. After transition, the pushing stage begins.
