Membrane Stripping (Sweeping)

A procedure where the provider separates the amniotic membranes from the cervix to encourage labor

๐Ÿ“– Definition

A procedure performed by a provider inserting a finger into the cervical opening and making a sweeping circular motion to separate the amniotic membranes from the lower uterine segment. This releases prostaglandins that may stimulate labor. Typically offered at 38โ€“40 weeks for women wanting to avoid formal induction. May cause cramping and spotting; labor onset is not guaranteed.
