A chronic condition in which tissue similar to the uterine lining (endometrium) grows outside the uterus โ€” on the ovaries, fallopian tubes, or elsewhere in the pelvis. It causes pain (especially during periods), inflammation, and scar tissue. Endometriosis affects up to 10% of women and is one of the leading causes of infertility and pelvic pain.
