The lower, narrow end of the uterus that opens into the vagina

The cylindrical lower portion of the uterus that connects the uterine cavity to the vagina. During pregnancy, the cervix is closed and plugged with mucus to protect the baby. As labor approaches, the cervix softens (ripens), effaces (thins), and dilates (opens) to allow delivery.
