Cerclage (Cervical Stitch)

A stitch placed in the cervix to prevent premature dilation in women at risk

A surgical procedure in which the cervix is sewn closed with strong sutures to prevent it from opening too early in pregnancy โ€” used to prevent preterm birth in women with cervical incompetence (a cervix that dilates without contractions). Placed typically between weeks 13โ€“16. The stitch is removed around 36โ€“37 weeks or when labor begins.
