A surgical procedure in which the cervix is sewn closed with strong sutures to prevent it from opening too early in pregnancy — used to prevent preterm birth in women with cervical incompetence (a cervix that dilates without contractions). Placed typically between weeks 13–16. The stitch is removed around 36–37 weeks or when labor begins.
