Baby's First Birthday: Transitioning to Family Foods
At 12 months, significant dietary shifts happen. Formula is no longer needed (breastfeeding can continue as long as desired). Baby can join family meals. Here's how to navigate the transition.
The Formula-to-Cow's-Milk Transition
At 12 months, formula can be replaced with whole cow's milk (if not breastfeeding). Start with 2โ3 cups (16โ24 oz) per day. Full-fat dairy is important for brain development at this age. Plant-based milks (oat, almond) should only replace cow's milk if recommended by your pediatrician, as they are nutritionally different.
Moving to Family Foods
By 12 months, most textures are appropriate if they're soft enough. Continue to avoid:
- Honey (until after 1st birthday โ risk of infant botulism)
- Whole grapes, cherry tomatoes, large pieces of food (choke hazards โ cut into quarters)
- Whole nuts and nut butters by the spoonful (thin with water)
- Hard raw vegetables and apples (unless grated)
- Added salt and sugar
- Cow's milk as a drink before 12 months (cooking with it is fine)
Dropping the Bottle
The AAP recommends transitioning away from bottles by 12โ15 months to protect dental health and prevent overdependence on bottle as comfort. Transition to an open cup or straw cup. This is often a process of several weeks โ replace one bottle at a time.
