Dizziness
Dizziness and lightheadedness are common throughout pregnancy. The body undergoes significant cardiovascular changes, and blood pressure and blood sugar fluctuations can cause dizziness.
Common Causes
- Blood vessels dilate in pregnancy, causing blood pressure to drop
- Blood volume expands but circulatory system needs time to adjust
- Standing up too quickly causes orthostatic hypotension
- Lying on your back (especially late pregnancy) compresses the vena cava
- Low blood sugar between meals
- Anemia (iron-deficiency) reduces oxygen-carrying red blood cells
- Dehydration and overheating
- Prolonged standing without moving
Remedies That May Help
Rise Slowly
When getting up from lying down or sitting, move slowly and pause before fully standing to let circulation adjust.
Eat Regular Small Meals
Prevents blood sugar dips that trigger dizziness.
Stay Hydrated
Drink at least 8–10 glasses of water daily. Dehydration is a major cause of dizziness.
Avoid Lying Flat on Your Back
After 20 weeks, lie on your left side to prevent compression of the vena cava and improve blood flow.
Move Your Legs When Standing
Shifting weight or flexing leg muscles when standing keeps blood from pooling in your legs.
Keep Cool
Avoid overheating — hot showers, hot tubs, and hot environments can cause blood pressure to drop.
When to Call Your Doctor
- Dizziness severe enough that you faint or nearly faint
- Dizziness with chest pain or palpitations
- Dizziness with severe headache or vision changes
- Dizziness with vaginal bleeding
- Dizziness that doesn't improve with rest and fluids
- Dizziness accompanied by shortness of breath at rest
- Rapid heart rate with dizziness
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it normal to feel dizzy in early pregnancy?
Yes — dizziness is very common in the first trimester as blood pressure adjusts and hormone levels change rapidly.
Can dizziness harm my baby?
Occasional dizziness does not harm the baby. However, if you faint and fall, the impact could be a concern — report any fainting to your provider.
Why do I get dizzy when I lie on my back?
After about 20 weeks, lying on your back can compress the vena cava (a major vein) under your growing uterus, reducing blood flow to your heart and brain.
Can anemia cause dizziness in pregnancy?
Yes — iron-deficiency anemia is common in pregnancy and reduces the oxygen carried to your brain, causing dizziness and fatigue. Your provider will screen for this.
What should I do if I feel faint while pregnant?
Sit or lie down immediately, lower your head if possible, loosen any tight clothing, and sip water. If you actually faint, seek immediate medical attention.
