A very early miscarriage that occurs shortly after implantation, usually within the first 5 weeks of pregnancy. A chemical pregnancy is detected only by a positive pregnancy test (because hCG is produced) before being lost — often before symptoms appear or before a gestational sac is visible on ultrasound. They are very common and usually require no medical treatment.
