The stage of embryo development reached about 5–6 days after fertilization. The blastocyst is a fluid-filled sphere of about 100–200 cells, with an inner cell mass that becomes the fetus and an outer layer (trophoblast) that becomes the placenta. At this stage, the embryo leaves the fallopian tube and implants into the uterine lining.
