Safe Sleep at 9 Months

At 9 months, separation anxiety peaks and babies become more aware of their sleep environment. SIDS risk continues to fall — but safe sleep rules remain in place through 12 months.

✅ Safe Sleep Checklist for 9 Month Old

⬆️

Back to Start

Always start sleep on the back. At this age, baby will choose their own position once asleep.

🛏️

Crib at Lowest Setting

If you haven't already, lower the crib mattress to its lowest position now.

🧹

Clear Sleep Area

Still no soft items. Three more months until the 12-month milestone when a small comfort item is acceptable.

💤

Sleep Sack

Continue using a sleep sack for warmth. It also prevents baby from climbing out as they get stronger.

😌

Consistent Bedtime Routine

A predictable routine (bath, feed, book, bed) signals the brain to wind down and improves sleep quality.

🌙

Dim and Quiet Environment

Keep the sleep environment dark and quiet. Blackout curtains help, especially in summer.

📌 Key Note for 9 Month Old

Nine months is peak separation anxiety. Baby may cry at bedtime more intensely than before — this is normal and not a reason to change sleep safety practices.

⚠️ Common Mistakes at This Age

  • Moving baby to an adult bed in response to separation anxiety
  • Adding a comfort object before the 12-month mark
  • Letting baby fall asleep in your arms every night without practicing independent sleep
  • Bringing baby to bed when they wake during the night

🚨 Call Your Pediatrician If…

  • Baby not crawling in some form (even scooting or rolling counts)
  • Baby not responding to their name consistently
  • Persistent sleep disruption combined with fever, pulling at ears
  • Baby seems to stop breathing during sleep — call 911

Frequently Asked Questions

My 9-month-old wakes up every hour. Is this normal?

Very common at this age due to separation anxiety and developmental leaps. It's exhausting but normal. Sleep training if you haven't tried it, or give it a few more weeks — it often resolves on its own.

Can I leave a small toy in the crib to help with the anxiety?

Not yet. Wait until 12 months for any soft items. A sleep-approved item like a pacifier is fine.

How do I handle the crib stand-up situation at night?

Go in, quietly lay baby down without a lot of engagement or light, say a simple reassurance ("It's sleepy time, I love you"), and leave. Repeat as needed — it usually resolves within a week of consistency.
