Safe Sleep at 8 Months
At 8 months, most babies are very mobile — rolling, sitting, and often pulling to stand. SIDS risk continues to decline but the safe sleep environment matters until 12 months.
✅ Safe Sleep Checklist for 8 Month Old
Start on Back
Place on back to start every sleep. Baby will move to their preferred position.
Mattress at Lowest Setting
If baby is pulling to stand, lower the mattress to the lowest level now — before they tumble out.
Still No Soft Bedding
No blankets, pillows, or stuffed animals until 12 months. A sleep sack is still the safest option.
Crib Safety Check
Verify crib slats are no more than 2⅜" apart. Check all hardware is tight. Mobile babies test every joint.
Sleep Sack Sizing
Make sure baby hasn't outgrown their sleep sack — it should fit snugly at the shoulders.
No Crib Tents or Nets
Crib tents and nets are not safety-tested and can cause strangulation. Keep the crib open.
📌 Key Note for 8 Month Old
Eight-month-olds who pull to stand can fall out of a crib if the mattress is too high. Lower it before this becomes a risk.
⚠️ Common Mistakes at This Age
- Waiting until baby falls out to lower the mattress
- Adding a crib rail cover or padding to prevent bumps
- Leaving a nightlight or sleep machine close enough for baby to reach
- Allowing baby to fall asleep in the stroller and leave them there overnight
🚨 Call Your Pediatrician If…
- Baby not bearing weight on legs when held standing
- Baby not showing any interest in crawling or mobility
- Sudden increase in night waking after a period of good sleep (may indicate ear infection)
- Baby appears to hold their breath or turns red/blue when crying
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it OK that my 8-month-old stands in the crib and can't get down?
This is very common and frustrating! Baby's brain learns to get up before it learns to get down. Practice sitting down from standing during playtime. In the meantime, go in and help baby back down without making it a big stimulating event.
My baby screams when I put them in the crib. Is something wrong?
This is often separation anxiety, which peaks around 8–10 months. It's developmentally normal. Maintain your bedtime routine, offer brief reassurance, and be consistent — it usually passes.
Can I use a sleep training method at this age?
Yes — most pediatric sleep specialists consider 4–6+ months appropriate for gentle sleep training. Talk to your pediatrician about which approach fits your family.
