Car Seat Laws in California
California has some of the strictest child passenger safety laws in the US, requiring back-seat riding until age 8.
Rear-Facing
Until age 2 OR until child exceeds RF weight/height limit of their seat
California law also requires children under 2 to be in the back seat
Forward-Facing
After RF stage until forward-facing seat limit; no specific age cutoff in law
Must ride in back seat until age 8 or 4'9" tall
Booster Seat
Until age 8 OR 4'9" tall
Must be in back seat in a booster until age 8 or 4'9"
Seat Belt Only
Age 8+ or 4'9" tall in back seat; front seat allowed with proper belt fit
Seat belt must fit properly across chest and hips — not across the neck
Fine for Violations
$100–$250 per violation
⚠️ Law vs. AAP Recommendations
State law sets the legal minimum. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends keeping children rear-facing as long as possible within the seat's weight and height limits — often beyond the legal minimum age. Always follow the seat manufacturer's guidelines and AAP recommendations for maximum safety.
