Thread-like structures found in the nucleus of cells that carry genetic information in the form of DNA. Humans normally have 46 chromosomes (23 pairs). Chromosomal abnormalities, such as having an extra chromosome 21 (trisomy 21, or Down syndrome), can cause various developmental conditions.
