✅ Storage Tips

1

Freeze milk in 2–4 oz portions — smaller amounts thaw faster and reduce waste.

2

Leave about 1 inch of space at the top of containers since milk expands when frozen.

3

Store at the back of the freezer, away from the door, for the most consistent temperature.

4

Label with date expressed and amount. Use oldest milk first.

5

Lay storage bags flat to freeze, then stand them upright once frozen to save space.

⚠️ What NOT to Do

  • Do not refreeze breast milk that has been thawed — bacteria multiply rapidly in previously frozen milk.
  • Do not freeze milk in bottles with disposable inserts — they can crack and contaminate.
  • Do not fill containers to the top — liquid expands as it freezes and can crack containers.
  • Do not thaw frozen breast milk at room temperature — always thaw in the refrigerator or under warm running water.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my frozen breast milk smell soapy or metallic after thawing?

This is caused by lipase, an enzyme in breast milk that breaks down fat. It's completely safe. If your baby refuses it, try scalding the milk (heating to just below boiling, then cooling) before freezing to deactivate lipase.

Is 6-month frozen milk still nutritious?

Yes, but some immune factors and nutrients degrade slightly over longer storage periods. Milk stored for 6 months is still far superior to formula. Use it — don't discard it.

Can I transport frozen breast milk?

Yes. Use a well-insulated cooler with dry ice or a high-quality freezer pack. Keep it frozen until you reach your destination. If it thaws completely during transport, refrigerate and use within 24 hours.
