Safe Sleep at 6 Months

At 6 months, SIDS risk begins to drop significantly — but it does not disappear until 12 months. The core safe sleep rules remain in place through the full first year.

✅ Safe Sleep Checklist for 6 Month Old

⬆️

Back to Start Every Sleep

Place baby on their back. Rolling babies can find their own position — but back is always the starting point.

🛏️

Crib with Firm Mattress

Most bassinets are outgrown by 6 months. A full crib is now the standard sleep surface.

🏠

Room-Share Decision Point

AAP recommends room-sharing through 12 months. You can transition to a separate room now if needed, but longer is better.

🧹

No Soft Items Yet

The temptation to add a lovey increases at this age — but soft items are not safe until 12 months.

💤

Appropriate Sleep Sack

Switch to a larger sleep sack as baby grows. Make sure armholes fit snugly to prevent slipping.

🍼

Continue Breastfeeding if Possible

Breastfeeding through 6 months and beyond continues to offer SIDS protection.

📌 Key Note for 6 Month Old

SIDS risk is roughly halved by 6 months compared to the peak at 2 months. But "safe sleep" rules apply through the full first year.

⚠️ Common Mistakes at This Age

  • Introducing a pillow or soft toy at 6 months, thinking the risk is gone
  • Letting baby sleep in a crib with bumpers because they hit the rails
  • Using a weighted sleep sack — these are not AAP-recommended
  • Transitioning to a toddler bed before 18–24 months

🚨 Call Your Pediatrician If…

  • Baby not sitting with support or showing trunk stability by 6 months
  • Baby not babbling, cooing, or responding to their name
  • Persistent snoring or pauses in breathing during sleep
  • Ear infections or illness that cause sudden sleep changes

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I give my 6-month-old a stuffed animal in the crib?

Not yet — wait until 12 months. At 6 months, babies lack the motor skills and judgment to safely manage soft objects during sleep.

We want to move baby to their own room. Is 6 months OK?

Room-sharing through 12 months provides the most protection, but 6 months is acceptable if needed. Use a video monitor and continue all other safe sleep practices.

Does the risk of SIDS really decrease at 6 months?

Yes, substantially. Around 90% of SIDS cases occur before 6 months. But the risk doesn't drop to zero until after 12 months, so safe sleep rules remain.
