Safe Sleep at 3 Months
At 3 months, babies become stronger and more social — and SIDS risk, while still present, begins to decline slightly from its 2-month peak. All AAP guidelines remain in effect.
✅ Safe Sleep Checklist for 3 Month Old
Back to Sleep for Every Sleep
Continue placing baby on their back for all sleep. Even if baby seems to prefer tummy, the risk remains real.
Approved Sleep Surface Only
Crib, bassinet, or play yard. Avoid any product recalled by CPSC (Fisher-Price Rock N Play, many inclined sleepers).
Room-Share for 3 More Months
The AAP recommends room-sharing for at least 6 months. At 3 months, you're halfway there.
Clear Sleep Space
Still no pillows, blankets, bumpers, or stuffed animals in the sleep area.
Sleep Sack Over Swaddle
If baby is showing rolling signs, switch from swaddle to a sleep sack immediately. Many 3-month-olds are done with swaddling.
Tummy Time When Awake
Supervised tummy time builds strength for rolling. 30+ minutes per day spread throughout the day.
📌 Key Note for 3 Month Old
Many 3-month-olds start attempting to roll. Once rolling attempts begin, swaddling must stop. This is the most important transition at this age.
⚠️ Common Mistakes at This Age
- Continuing to swaddle after baby shows rolling attempts
- Letting baby sleep in baby carrier or wrap for extended periods unsupervised
- Moving baby to their own room before 6 months to "get more sleep"
- Placing baby in an Owlet or similar monitor as a substitute for safe sleep practices
🚨 Call Your Pediatrician If…
- Baby stops breathing for 10+ seconds — call 911
- Persistent high-pitched cry combined with lethargy
- Baby is not tracking faces or making eye contact
- Significant change in feeding combined with change in sleep
Frequently Asked Questions
My 3-month-old rolled to their side during sleep. What do I do?
Reposition them to their back. At this age, they cannot reliably roll back to a safe position on their own. Once they can roll both ways independently, you can leave them in whatever position they find.
Can I use a swaddle transition product?
Yes — products with one arm out (like the Zipadee-Zip or Love to Dream transition) can help bridge the gap between swaddle and sleep sack. Make sure whatever you use is AAP-compliant and fits properly.
Is white noise safe for sleeping babies?
White noise can help babies sleep and is safe if kept at a reasonable volume (below 50 dB, roughly a quiet conversation). Keep the machine away from the crib and don't use it at full volume.
