Safe Sleep at 13 Months
Past the first birthday, SIDS risk continues to decline. Sleep is now shifting as some toddlers begin dropping to one nap. The crib remains the safest sleep space.
โ Safe Sleep Checklist for 13 Month Old
Keep Using the Crib
The crib is still the safest option at 13 months. Transition to a toddler bed when baby can climb out repeatedly, typically 18โ24 months.
One Small Comfort Item
A small lovey or stuffed animal is now appropriate. Keep it to one item and choose something flat and breathable.
Sleep Sack or Light Blanket
A sleep sack is still ideal. If using a blanket, keep it thin and only cover the lower body.
No Pillow Yet
Hold off on a pillow until 18 months. Toddlers don't need pillows and the aspiration risk persists.
Dark and Quiet Room
Continue using blackout curtains and white noise for the best sleep quality.
Nap Transition Watch
Some 13-month-olds start resisting the morning nap. Don't rush the 2โ1 nap transition โ most children do it between 15โ18 months.
๐ Key Note for 13 Month Old
At 13 months, the biggest sleep challenge is often the 2-to-1 nap transition, not safety. Most children aren't ready until 15โ18 months.
โ ๏ธ Common Mistakes at This Age
- Transitioning to a toddler bed too early at 13 months
- Introducing a full-size pillow because "they're a toddler now"
- Forcing the 2โ1 nap transition before baby is ready
- Assuming all sleep safety is over now that SIDS risk has dropped
๐จ Call Your Pediatrician Ifโฆ
- Baby is not walking independently (or close) by 13โ15 months
- No words or only a few sounds by 13 months โ mention to pediatrician
- Loud snoring, mouth breathing, or sleep apnea signs
- Extreme sleep refusal combined with other behavioral changes
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it time to drop to one nap at 13 months?
Probably not yet โ most children make this transition between 15โ18 months. Watch for consistent nap refusal (not just occasional) and difficulty sleeping at night before making the switch.
My 13-month-old climbs everything. Should I move to a toddler bed?
Not necessarily. Lower the mattress to the floor if possible, or use a sleep sack to limit climbing. Most sleep experts recommend keeping the crib until 18โ24 months.
Can my toddler have a pillow now?
The AAP recommends waiting until 18 months for a small toddler pillow. At 13 months, they don't physiologically need one and it still presents a minor risk.
