Safe Sleep at 1 Month
At 1 month, your baby is growing rapidly but still has very limited ability to control their head and body. All newborn safe sleep rules remain fully in effect.
✅ Safe Sleep Checklist for 1 Month Old
Back to Sleep, Every Time
One month olds cannot lift their head if face-down. Back sleep is non-negotiable for every sleep, including all naps.
Firm Flat Surface
Crib, bassinet, or AAP-approved play yard only. No rockers, swings, bouncers, or inclined products.
Room-Share (Not Bed-Share)
Continuing to room-share reduces SIDS risk. Baby should be in their own sleep space in your room.
Empty Sleep Area
Absolutely no soft bedding, pillows, bumpers, or positional devices in the crib or bassinet.
One Layer More Than You
A sleep sack is a safe alternative to a blanket and keeps baby warm without loose fabric.
Breastfeeding Reduces SIDS Risk
If possible, breastfeeding at any amount is protective. If you breastfeed in bed and fall asleep, move baby back to their sleep surface as soon as you wake.
📌 Key Note for 1 Month Old
At 1 month, some parents notice baby seems more settled sleeping on an incline. This is unsafe — inclined sleep is linked to infant deaths and is explicitly banned by the CPSC.
⚠️ Common Mistakes at This Age
- Using a Dock-A-Tot, Snuggle Me, or similar lounger as a sleep surface
- Leaving baby to sleep in a bouncer or swing when unsupervised
- Placing a rolled blanket or towel beside baby "for support"
- Allowing grandparents or caregivers to apply old-fashioned sleep practices
🚨 Call Your Pediatrician If…
- Baby is unusually hard to wake, limp, or unresponsive
- Breathing seems fast, slow, or very irregular
- Baby appears blue around the lips or fingernails
- Baby has a fever over 100.4°F (38°C)
Frequently Asked Questions
My baby sleeps better on their side. Is that OK?
No. Side sleep is not recommended — babies can roll from their side to their stomach. Back sleep is the only safe position until baby can roll independently.
When should I stop swaddling?
Stop swaddling as soon as your baby shows any signs of rolling — this is usually around 8 weeks. Once a swaddled baby rolls to their stomach, they cannot push up to breathe.
Can I use a wearable blanket or sleep sack?
Yes — sleep sacks are a great safe alternative to loose blankets. Make sure it fits properly (not too loose around the neck) and is appropriate for the room temperature.
