ASTM F2670CPSC Drowning Prevention Guidelines

✅ Essential Safety Checklist

Never Leave Baby Unattended

A baby can drown in as little as 1 inch of water in under 60 seconds. Never leave, even to answer the phone.

Water Temperature 98-100°F

Test with your elbow or a bath thermometer. Set your water heater to 120°F max to prevent scalding.

Non-Slip Surface

Use a non-slip mat in the tub. Infant bath seats should have suction cups that grip securely.

Gather Everything First

Have towels, soap, clean diaper, and clothes within arm's reach before putting baby in the water.

2-3 Inches of Water

Only fill the tub with 2-3 inches of water for infants. Increase gradually as baby grows and sits independently.

🚫 What to Avoid

  • Bath seats as a substitute for supervision (they can tip over)
  • Running water while baby is in the tub (temperature can change suddenly)
  • Adult bath products (use gentle, fragrance-free baby wash)
  • Inflatable tubs without proper support structure

❓ Safety FAQs

How often should I bathe my newborn?
2-3 times per week is sufficient for newborns. Daily baths can dry out delicate skin. Sponge baths until the umbilical cord stump falls off (usually 1-3 weeks).
When can my baby sit in a regular bathtub?
Once they can sit up unsupported (around 6 months), you can transition to a regular tub with a non-slip mat. Always stay within arm's reach.
Are bath seats safe?
Bath seats can help support baby but are NOT safety devices. You must still supervise continuously. Never leave a child in a bath seat unattended — they can tip over.
