When you and your partner decide you want to have a baby, figuring out when you are most likely to get pregnant is important. Or on the other hand, if you are trying not to get pregnant, knowing this same information may be beneficial to you.
To start with the most simple and basic fact, you are most likely to get pregnant when you are most fertile, at the time of ovulation. Tracking your cycle will be very beneficial for you. Tracking your cycle should be something that every woman does whether they are trying to determine ovulation or not. Let us get down to the basics. When you ovulate, an egg is released from your ovary and the egg is only viable for 12 to 24 hours. Sperm can last 48 to 72 hours after sex. Using those times frames, there is a very small window for you to get pregnant. Isn’t that crazy? This is such a short period of time, but this is the period of time when you are most likely to get pregnant.
After you know when you are ovulating, you will want to plan to have sex on your most fertile days, if you are trying to get pregnant, or avoid those days if you are trying to avoid pregnancy. Your most fertile days are usually three days before you ovulate until the actual day you ovulate. Remember, sperm can last up to 48 hours to 72 hours after sex, so make sure you keep those time frames in mind.
To help determine this time frame, tracking when you ovulate is important. There are some fertility apps available such as Kinadra or Glow. These apps can be downloaded onto your phone, so you have easy access to record what is going on with your body.
As mentioned above, having sex before you ovulate is when you have a better chance of becoming pregnant. If you are trying to avoid pregnancy, you will want to avoid any sexual intercourse during ovulation.
Checking your basal body temperature may sound a little old school, but if you want to determine when you are most likely to get pregnant, it is best to do it. A lot of the fertility apps have an area to record your basal body temperature also. What is your basal body temperature? This is the temperature of your body when you are at full rest. When you ovulate, your body temperature increases. Checking and recording your basal body temperature daily can help you predict when you are most fertile. The best time of day to check your basal body temperature is first thing in the morning, before you get out of bed. Make sure you use an accurate thermometer or a specific basal thermometer.
You can also keep a close eye on your cervical mucous. This goes hand in hand with tracking your cycle. Some women do not track their cycles closely, but notice a change in their cervical mucous and know it may be getting close. When you notice that your mucous is clear, stretchy and is similar to egg whites, this is when you are most fertile. This is when you are mostly likely to become pregnant.
As mentioned above, having sex before you ovulate would be beneficial. It can be a common misconception that you should have sex right after ovulation, because this is when you are most likely to get pregnant. Although you very well could get pregnant, your best bet for pregnancy is having sex a few days before ovulation.
If you really are not into tracking your cycle or checking your basal body temperature, using an ovulation predictor kit may be a great option for you. It also may be something you want to do on top of the other two methods, to cover all your bases. An ovulation predictor kit checks your luteinizing hormone (LH) and is about 99% accurate. The luteinizing hormone is always present in your urine. At about 24 to 48 hours this hormone increases and triggers your egg to be released, or in other words, ovulation occurs. If you can determine this luteinizing hormone increase, you will know the best time to have sex to become pregnant.
A fertility monitor accurately predicts ovulation up to 7 days in advance. These can be pretty pricey, about $300. If you really want to know when you are most likely to get pregnant, you can use this monitor. A fertility monitor basically does everything for you. It takes and tracks your body’s chemistry readings and creates an ovulation calendar with its information. This is highly recommended if you are not having regular cycles.
A lot of women use tracking their ovulation and tools to either become pregnant quickly or to avoid pregnancy. If couples do not like to use any form of birth control and are trying to avoid pregnancy, they may opt to use these methods. It is extremely important to know that if you are trying to avoid pregnancy to make sure you are sure when ovulation occurs. It is not recommended to use this method unless you are completely sure about how your body works.
