From the former Kingdom of Yugoslavia to Monaco’s royal family, 2018 was the royal baby year worldwide. The biggest limelight, however, fell on Britain’s Prince William and his wife, Kate Middleton. Britain’s royal couple welcomed their third; a baby boy named Prince Louis, into the world on 23rd April this year.
Following this was another British royal event that made equally regal headlines the very next month. Prince Harry married the American actress Meghan Markle on 19 May 2018. The baby fever and the royal wedding combined, thus, call for the bestowing of the label ‘the expansion year of royal lineage,’ upon the year 2018.
Charlotte Casiraghi, eleventh in line to the throne of Monaco, is the newest addition to the list now. The 31-year-old model-royalty is expecting a baby with her filmmaker fiancé, Dimitri Rassam later this year.

Monaco’s Royal Family and Hollywood
A small city-state, Monaco’s royal family attracts even smaller media coverage globally. But even then, the family managed to get the attention of the world on numerous occasions. In 1954, the American actress Grace Kelly tied the knot with Prince Rainier III, the ruler of Monaco then. A superstar of her time, Kelly’s marriage to the prince was a huge media event.
Last year, reports surfaced that Hollywood actor Brad Pitt was dating the Princess Charlotte of Monaco. The royal family was once again the focus of global media. The couple, it was reported, was desperately trying to have a baby, since Brad loved being a dad. His custody dispute with former wife and Hollywood star, Angelina Jolie made the actor realize it more. Or so it was said. The report, however, turned out to be ‘fake news’ later on and Pitt, too, denied dating the Princess ever.
Charlotte, the Quiet Unquiet Princess
Charlotte is the granddaughter of Prince Rainier III and his wife, Princess Grace Kelly, and daughter of Kelly’s second born, Princess Caroline. Charlotte’s mother married thrice. It was with her second husband, Stefano Casiraghi; an Italian businessman, that Charlotte was born. The princess has two other siblings from her mother’s same marriage as well.
Known to live a private life, Charlotte, it is said, is highly independent in her decision making. Something that is evident from her rule-breaking personal life too. While her fiancé, Dimitri, 36, has a daughter from his marriage to model Masha Novoselova, Charlotte too has a son, Raphael, from her previous relationship with comedian Gad Elmaleh. Her relationship with the comedian also remained in the news for a 16-year age gap between the two.
Engagement, Baby, and Wedding
A former Gucci model, Princess Charlotte, finally revealed the much-speculated pregnancy showing the baby bump at 9th Monte Carlo International Horse Jumping event in June this year. The couple had just gotten engaged a few weeks back in March 2018 after friends introduced them back in December 2016. The revelation of the development came by Charlotte wearing a diamond ring on her left hand as she attended the 64th annual Bal de la Rose in Monte Carlo with fiancé Dimitri. A wedding between the two is also planned for later this year.
Planned to take place between June and the current month initially, the wedding has now been pushed to post-summer. Since Charlotte is reportedly due in August, the couple is in no mood to divert attention elsewhere.
Winters it may be, but whenever the wedding takes place, it won’t be a cold event. Among various celebrations planned, the wedding in Monaco will have a follow-up party on the Italian island of Pantelleria. Dimitri’s actress mother, Carole Bouquet, here on the island, owns a vineyard villa.
Meghan and Charlotte: Princesses with Hollywood Blood
The actor turned British royal, Meghan Markle is undoubtedly the ‘The Hollywood Princess of today.’ But numerous actresses including, Rita Hayworth and Zsa Zsa Gabor married into royal families of different stature before her. It was, however, the American superstar, Grace Kelly, who stood as the most prominent Hollywood royal bride before Meghan.
Kelly, also Charlotte’s grandmother, married Prince Rainer III of Monaco in 1956 and became the Princess of the city-state. She retained the title till her death in 1982. Prince Rainier III refused to remarry again after his wife’s death and died on 6th April 2005.
Royal Babies This Year
There is a reason this year perfectly fits the title of the ‘expansion year of royal lineage.’ Birth of Prince Louis in the British Kingdom and Charlotte Casiraghi’s baby news aside, so far there have been five other notable royal births in the current year.
The first one took place in the royal family of former Kingdom of Yugoslavia. It was Prince Philip and his wife Princess Danica who welcomed their first, a boy named Stefan, on 25th February 2018.
The second such birth took place in the Kingdom of Sweden. On 9th March 2018, Princess Madeleine, the daughter of the King of Sweden, gave birth to her third child, a daughter named Princess Adrienne.
The next two lesser known royal births took place in the Principality of Monaco. Brothers of Charlotte Casiraghi, Andrea and Pierre Casiraghi, welcomed their respective heirs into the world. While Andrea welcomed his third, a boy named Maximilian on 19th April, Pierre’s newborn was his second, a boy named Francesco, born on 21st May 2018.
The last such birth took place in the Royal family of the United Kingdom. Queen’s granddaughter, Zara Tindall welcomed her second daughter, Lena Elizabeth, on 18 June 2018. She is married to former Rugby player Mike Tindall.
Charlotte Casiraghi’s expected addition to this list will surely be a great one. For now, we wish the mother and the baby to come a healthy deliverance and life beyond.
